In this survey and reappraisal of an era, many minor as well as major artists are discussed and illustrated. By concentrating on what the artists and contemporary critics did and said, and by looking at what the artists painted, the author raises very sharply the question of whether the term "Post-Impressionist" has any meaning. But what matters, of course, is not the label, but the ever-changing reality and the richness of individual achievement.
This edition features 180 illustrations, including 80 in colour.

Belinda Thomson studied at the University of East Anglia and the Sorbonne before earning her MA in art history at the Courtauld Institute.
From 1977 to 1983, Thomson was a research assistant at the Open University, United Kingdom, and lectured at the Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Edinburgh. She is an honorary fellow at the University of Edinburgh and an independent scholar.
Thomson was curator for the exhibitions Patrick Geddes: The French Connection, 2005, and Gauguin's Vision (same year), both at the National Galleries of Scotland.
She was an advisory consultant and contributing author to the exhibition ""Gauguin, Paris, 1889"", 2009, at the Cleveland Museum of Art and at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
As a specialist of late nineteenth-century French art, Thomson has written books and articles on impressionism and post-impressionism and Gauguin, Vuillard, Bonnard, Van Gogh, and Pissarro, including Gauguin by Himself, 2001, and Van Gogh's Paintings: The Masterpieces, 2007. She is a coauthor of the exhibition catalogue "Gauguin: Maker of Myth", 2010.
