ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mário Cesariny de Vasconcelos attended the António Arroio School of Decorative Arts and studied music with the composer Fernando Lopes Graça.

Poet, painter and fundamental reference of Portuguese surrealism since then, he is one of the greatest voices of Portuguese poetry of the 20th century.

From then on, for Cesariny, surrealism represented “the total realization of our state of mind, the defense of love, freedom and poetry”.

And his work, both in poetry, painting and in real life, was testimony to this enormous will to live.

On the other hand, rebellious, unusual, challenging, Mário Cesariny marked several generations of readers and authors with his work who made his verses unique references, which go beyond pure literature and always place him further, in life itself.

Soon after, he went to Paris and entered the Académie de la Grande Chaumière . In arts and letters, Mário Cesariny is considered the main representative of surrealism in Portugal.

In Paris, he led him to create, in 1947, the “Lisbon Surrealist Group”.
Together with António Pedro, José-Augusto França, Cândido Costa Pinto, Vespeira, Moniz Pereira and Alexandre O´Neill.
Which will have as its anti-group “Os Surrealistas”, a group also founded by Cesariny the following year.

His work includes titles such as “Corpo Visível” (1950), “Manual de Prestidigitação” (1956), “Pena Capital”, “Nobilíssima Visão” (1959), “Antologia Surrealista do Cáver Esquisito” (1961), “ A Cidade Queimada” (with graphic arrangement and illustrations by Cruzeiro Seixas, 1965), “Burlescas, among others.

In short, in the last years of his life, he developed a frenetic activity of transformation and rehabilitation or “redemption” of everyday reality, from which many collages with paintings, objects, installations and other material fantasies were born.

Finally, “I would like to have one of those good deaths, where a person goes to sleep and never wakes up again”, he stated in “Autografia”.
